tenor 240x140 - Maynard James Keenan's frontman wishlist.

Maynard James Keenan’s frontman wishlist.

In his interview wuth Revolver magazine, Maynard James Keenan (Tool,Puscifer,Perfect Circle) talks about some of his favorite frontmen/frontwomen that he admires and draws inspiration from.  A name or two on the list may surprise you.

Steve Martin
“He shreds on the banjo. He has totally inspired me as a frontman, as a performer, and as a musician. I never saw him onstage other than on video, but he’s amazing with a crowd, and his stand-up albums were like rock records.”

Gerald Casale (Devo)
“He’s an absolute nightmare in the best way possible. The things that come out of that guy’s mouth are just pure poetry. He is his own man. He speaks his own mind. It’s like he has no filter from brain to mouth.”

Henry Rollins (Black Flag)
“I saw Black Flag perform half a dozen times back in 1982. The intensity he was putting out onstage was really inspiring—that raw, crazy energy. These days, he’s not the same intense, fly-off-the-handle open nerve that he was back then. He has evolved, and he’s come gracefully to where he is now. He’s not afraid to say what he thinks, and it’s great to see.”

Bill Murray
“As far as being an eloquent asshole and prick, he’s amazing. He was recently busted for driving a golf cart drunk. That’s better than Axl Rose ever did. And Axl Rose wasn’t in Groundhog Day, so fuck him.”

Joni Mitchell
“On her early stuff, she was doing everything herself. So never mind that she was a female performer trying to make it in a male performer’s world. She was actually producing, writing, and performing all on her own, which was pretty ballsy back in the day.”

Patti Smith
“She did freeform poetry and it was amazing. I don’t ever have the balls to do that kind of stuff where you kind of just go for it and jam in front of people and riff.”

David Bowie
“He went through his changes gracefully, also. And he explored all these different areas as an actor, as a music maker, as a visual artist. ‘Ashes to Ashes’ is still one of my favorite videos ever.”

LAMPO FW17

YASUNAO TONE
SAT OCT 14 8PM
GRAHAM FOUNDATION
4 WEST BURTON PL

FREE; RSVP HERE.

Artist, writer, theorist and composer Yasunao Tone presents new work embracing artificial intelligence.

Tone has collaborated with Professor Tony Myatt, University of Surrey UK, and a team of researchers including Mark Fell and Dr. Paul Modler, with the support of the Issue Project Room. A series of performances using Tone’s MP3 Deviation software were captured in a laboratory then used to train Kohoen Neural Networks to develop artificial intelligences that can simulate several of his performance approaches. The AIs are integrated in a software framework and computer performance system that extracts attributes from the audio they generate to “listen” to the output and make performance actions as if they were virtual Tone performers. Five versions of Tone AI exist in the performance software, each of which exhibits certain responses modeled on those previously adopted by Tone.

Here for Lampo, Tone performs AI Deviation V1#7 and AI Deviation V2#2.

In concert Tone deviates and controls AI versions of himself along with the mechanisms that each AI uses to hear and respond to the audio they generate—corrupting the technologies designed to simulate his own performances, and interacting live with AI versions of himself as performer.

Yasunao Tone (b.1935, Tokyo, Japan) has been active in creating event works and experimental music since the 1960s and has been an organizer and participant in Fluxus, Group Ongaku, Hi-Red Center and Team Random (Japan’s first computer art group). His work typically employs random events and indeterminate compositional techniques. Tone coined the term “paramedia art” to describe his work, and his artistic inventions include prepared CD and interventions with an MP3 system. Primarily a composer, Tone has worked in many media, creating pieces for electronics, computer systems, film, radio and television, as well as environmental art. His work is distinguished by conversion of text into music via images with analog and digital means, and with a critique of the medium in use. Tone has presented concerts at the Kitchen, MoMA and the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona; the Ars Electronica Festival, Linz; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Sonic Lights, Amsterdam; and ATP festivals and Lovebytes festivals, UK, among many others. Honors include the Ars Electronica Golden Nica prize and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts award in music.

Yasunao Tone presented his Paramedia Mix and Wounded Kanji Dictionary at Lampo in April 2007. He also performed in the Lampo series in November 2002, joined by Florian Hecker in the duo’s first U.S. concert.

Busker performs his version of John Lennon’s “Imagine”

I love me some street musician performances. This busker gave the commuters chances to sing along though he picked up the crowd’s slack just fine. A very nice version of John Lennonir?source=bk&t=312land 20&bm id=default&l=ktl&linkId=a48f407d3ae63af5a4f186df016a1d19& cb=1507585568678 - Busker performs his version of John Lennon's "Imagine"‘s “Imagineir?source=bk&t=312land 20&bm id=default&l=ktl&linkId=caaed2e9271674dc67319e6b990c0379& cb=1507585597197 - Busker performs his version of John Lennon's "Imagine"” on the Chicago Blue Line subway ir?source=bk&t=312land 20&bm id=default&l=ktl&linkId=a5da5bb4bd18172b2ed8bc5d2a10c562& cb=1507585633371 - Busker performs his version of John Lennon's "Imagine"platform.  Something about the trust involved in being blind and having the money bucket out on the L platform adds a bit to the feeling of the song.

You’ll want to watch through to the end. This guy knows how to use the moving trains to his advantage!

Second Amendment - The right to bear arms for a well regulated militia (muskets)

Why can we buy machine guns?

I think it is time to talk about this. It’s time to reflect on this awful crime while it is a topic and review our laws in the midst of the most recent, and horrible, tragedy. We need discussions with our leaders now, when all of this matters most and is top of mind and not a 3rd page news story. Like every other normal citizen in this country, I cried when I heard about Las Vegas, just like all of these tragedies. I am devastated for those families and friends who lost someone they loved. But I am also angry, and now is the time to find an intelligent way to decrease the violence that seems to be plaguing in this country.

Before we argue, let’s start with a history lesson. On December 15, 1791, The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution was created and reads: “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The Senate recently vited to change the language of this law to remove the word “militia”. That’s like removing the “N” word from Huckleberry Fin. We know it was there and what it meant. You didn’t change any of the meaning, you just removed it so it didn’t offend anyone.

The original law was written based loosely on a law brought over from England, which we fled by the way because of persecution. It was also partially based on Americans wanting to be free from dictator rules and afforded people the freedoms to protect themselves from armed mauraduers who invaded America. It allowed them to protect their land and their families when we didn’t live on top of each other and needed help. I get it, and I agree with affording American citizens with liberties we could not be allowed in countries. And I support our constitution and bill of rights, but…

This law was written over 200 years ago when there were less than 4 million people in this country and guns were single-shot muskets that had to be manually loaded with powder and ball for each shot. Now we have self loading, automatic assault weapons that shoot 50-60 high-caliber bullets per minute and can be bought in nearly every town, in every state.

I am not saying we should ban all guns. I believe in the rights of gun owners. If you want a handgun to protect your family or a rifle to go hunting, I am on your side 100%. But to allow any citizen of this country own a fully automatic weapon, or to own 20-40-50 guns that were sold as semi automatic and give anyone the tools to customize them to do this in their garage, is what we need to discuss. There is no legitimate need for a regular citizen to own one of these. If you’re out hunting deer with an AK 47, you need therapy.

What we need is common sense from citizens and those who we elect to protect us. We just need to rethink the types of weapons that should be legal and stop wrapping ouselves in the second amendment and get the NRA out of Washington so we can find a sensible solution to a pervading problem that continues to plague this country.

I’m expecting arguments to my post, and I am open to debate. But please do so in a calm, sensible manner and I would be happy to hear your point of view. Because that’s the kind of discussion we should be having.

Thanks,

-H

lynx kittens on front porch

Man awakens to wild kitties on his porch.

Tim Newton woke up to suspicious noises at the door of his Alaskan home and worried that he was being burglarized. What he instead found was a bunch of cute lynx kittens with their mom.

The Alaska photographer figured maybe it was a bear that was clawing at the front door. When he finally built up the nerve to take a peak, he was rewarded with this nice display.
