Animals sick of our crap, calling it a day…

(A lynx at night. photographed by George Shiras)

After looking at 62 mammal species on six continents, a recent study published in Science found that 83 percent of these species are doing more and more of their business in the dark rather than deal with humans and all of our accompanying guns, cars, noise and other forms of harassment.

Quinn (a.k.a.Shy Gray the Russian Blue) snoring as she takes a cat nap

Quinn the cat

Quinn found her mommy when she was just a fuzzy gray Russian Blue kitten and has lived with her humanoid parents and usually two other cats for about sixteen years since. While she always could have been mistaken for an older kitten, her age and catness will show on the occasional mistep and fuzzy little eye squints.

We’ve been fortunate enough to babysit her when her parents are out of town (which is often) or if they just want a little bit of cease fire among her and the other two very young kitties. It seems that Shy Gray (that’s Quinn) isn’t putting up with any kitten b.s. and can show some grumpiness towards the noobs.  While she’s here, she is queen and doesn’t have to smell any other cat. This is her her summer home to come and go as she (her parents, really) wishes.

Turn the volume up for this one to make sure you hear her cute little snoring!

Eastern Puma declared extinct

U.S. authorities declare Eastern puma extinct – Portland Press Herald

It finally happened on January 23, 2018. Yes, in many ways that’s devastating news. Somehow we let another incredible creature disappear from the world. Here’s the thing, though — the last sighting of this particular big cat occurred some 80 years ago. The eastern puma has been gone for a long, long time. So why is the cat only being removed from the list?

Federal officials have declared the Eastern puma extinct, 80 years after the last confirmed sighting of a graceful wildcat that once roamed widely from the upper Midwest to the Atlantic seaboard. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced this week that it was removing the animal from the endangered species list. The move completes a process started in 2015, when it proposed dropping federal protections for the Eastern puma, also known as the cougar, mountain lion and catamount.

He’s referencing the fact that cougars often travel alone, often at night, and they’re hard to track. When most people come across one in the wild, it’s usually by accident. To see one in the northeastern U.S. is even more rare, almost certainly a fluke. Not since 1932 and 1938 in New Brunswick and Maine, respectively, were cougars officially recorded in the northeastern U.S.

Toxic turkey cooking bag kills multiple pet birds

A woman (Ayesha) recently posted a message on Facebook reporting that the fumes from a Jennie-O turkey bag has killed 9 of her birds:

Please share so anyone with a bird will know never to use these… I have 50+ birds from Parrots to Parakeets.. Never ever again. Walmart substituted my two turkey breasts with a Jennie-O Turkey Cajun in a cooking bag. I know not to use non stick and gave all of mine away the first day I got birds and spent over $1k on Simply Ming cookware. Apparently the cooking bag is toxic to birds. Within 30 minutes of the turkey cooking in the oven my birds started dying. [My roommate] found the first two and I knew something was wrong. By the time he walked back upstairs more were dying. We literally grabbed cages and ran them outside. All the birds are in the garage tonight covered up. I lost nine of my babies. I’m heartbroken.. Minnie looked online and read that Reynolds and other cooking bags ARE toxic to birds.. I have books on birds and read extensively online before getting my birds.. I never saw anything before now that said cook bags were toxic. A warning needs to be on the label! 😢 My grandson just came home tonight after being born Thanksgiving – which is why we were making a delayed Thanksgiving dinner – and I have to wonder how toxic the cooking bag is for all of us, especially a little five week early preemie baby – if my birds died that quick. We will NEVER EVER buy another turkey in a cooking bag and will NEVER buy Jenny-O-Turkey again.. There should be a warning on the package that the fumes are toxic to birds!!! I never wanted a whole turkey to begin with and Walmart subbed it during a pick up order… You can’t imagine how sad I am right now.. 😢☹️😢 #walmart #turkey #Jennyoturkey edited to say – PLEASE CHECK MY ADDITIONAL COMMENTS BELOW, AND CLICK ON THE ORIGINAL POST TO SHARE. MANY ARE PRIVATELY MSGING SAYING THEY CANNOT SHARE FROM OTHER PAGES… ALSO PLEASE STOP SENDING ME HATEFUL MESSAGES. ONE OUT OF TEN PMS I RECEIVE ARE CRUEL AND MEAN – THE OTHER 90% VERY KIND. IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY MEAN – POST IT HERE INSTEAD OF HIDING LIKE COWARDS. I AM JUST TRYING TO SAVE OTHER BIRDS AND KEEP OTHER BIRD FAMILIES FROM SUFFERING THIS TERRIBLE LOSS!!!!

Jennie-O left this brief reply:

Hello, we are very sorry to hear about your experience. We would like to speak with you and learn more about what happened. Please DM us so we can further assist you.

What I’d like to see is your label change to include a warning to bird owners so others don’t lose their babies like we have. These weren’t just birds to us – they were our family – these were tame birds that we played with daily. They brought joy to our life and helped me with my anxiety disorder. You can’t imagine my pain. I don’t want anyone else to suffer this. I don’t feel like cooking bags are safe and in this case they proved deadly to my babies. I will DM you later. Right now my back and neck injuries are killing me (I have injuries from a drunk driver hitting me years ago) I’m not supposed to carry anything over ten pounds and I was lifting four and five foot cages trying to run down stairs to save my babies and still had to watch them gasp for breath and die 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 so I’m in pain inside and out. Never again. Never again, if cooking bags are deadly to my birds imagine how my little preemie grandson with his tiny lungs could have been affected if I’d cooked it the whole four hours with the bag. That turkey went in the trash – not one of us could bare to eat it. 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 Everyone keeps telling me to sue and call the media… I want to know that other bird babies and bird parents won’t suffer like our babies did and like we are now 🙏🙏🙏

For those of you sending me hateful comments & private messages and saying it was cleaning products or candles, etc… I don’t use oven cleaners – because of my birds! I don’t have air freshener sprays because of my birds.. Not one candle has been burned in my home since I bought my first bird! I got rid of all my non stick pans before the first bird came home with us! I came home from work, put the turkey in the oven and within 30 Min – as soon as the smell of the turkey and a weird smell from the bag filled the house – my babies started dying!! There was nothing else cooking, nothing else going on different in our home except the turkey cooking! I do have Carbon monoxide alarms too – they didn’t go off.. Online it mentions these being toxic – I never knew before though I’d purchased many bird books, talked to bird owners and also read online about how to help keep my babies safe. We only found out when they died and my daughter searched “are cooking bags toxic to birds “.. Apparently Reynolds says their bags are bird safe – however online you can find places that say they aren’t. I never did say our cooking bag was Reynolds, I said my daughter found that in her web search. What I did say was that this was a Jennie-O Turkey with a cooking bag. Also – I did not ask Walmart or tell Walmart that it was OK to sub. I ordered two breasts and instead of holding the product I paid for – they subbed a whole turkey that I didn’t want to begin with. This was picked up in the pickup area. I knew about it AFTERWARDS – I did not go in the store and buy this product. The fact remains that the bag WAS toxic and killed many of my babies. A warning needs to be on the package or they need to change the bags they use to be bird safe. Don’t you remember that Teflon has been proven to be unsafe at certain temperatures for PEOPLE and that in the old days they took canaries in mines to make sure the air was safe. If the canary died they got the hell out of there! Why – the air was not safe for the bird then not safe for humans! Let’s not forget my 5 week early preemie grandson just came home the same day! What if it had affected him? We rushed him outside too to fresh air and opened all the windows to clear the air. Please stop sending cruel messages and instead let other pet owners know that they should NOT use this product. Hopefully a warning is added to the label. No one else should have to go through this needlessly…😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢

lynx kittens on front porch

Man awakens to wild kitties on his porch.

Tim Newton woke up to suspicious noises at the door of his Alaskan home and worried that he was being burglarized. What he instead found was a bunch of cute lynx kittens with their mom.

The Alaska photographer figured maybe it was a bear that was clawing at the front door. When he finally built up the nerve to take a peak, he was rewarded with this nice display.

Squeaks McGee – The adorable rescue kitten

Squeaks McGee- the adorable rescued kitten who loves climbing atop shoulders. Such a cute little squeeker. She was found alone in an open drawer in an abandoned building. It appears she was the runt that wasn’t able to crawl out after the rest of the litter moved along. Last word on “Isabella” or “Izzy” was that she was doing great with her adopted family.
