This Dog Has Bite

For those who follow the NFL, you know that when you least expect it, expect it. Week 3 was a perfect indication of that. The reason that this happens EVERY YEAR is that the NFL has few dominant teams and a lot of weak and mediocre teams, which is why many use the word “parity” when talking about the NFL. That being said, Week 5 is time for that to showcase itself once again. There is one winless NFL team left; the Arizona Cardinals. They are on the road this week at San Francisco, who has taken a huge fall from pre-season grace with the loss of QB Jimmy Garappolo. The Niners looked good against San Diego last week, but I think that it was more of a product of the Chargers’ defense being in the infirmary. Arizona is showing signs of life….too bad the ownership was brain dead when they decided that Sam Bradford could stand upright if they stacked $20 million next to him. Not bad wages for 2+ games. At least they pointed towards the future with Josh Rosen in a winnable games versus the Bears. He has looked very poised in his 2 games and that is helping open up the running game. With the inability for the opposing defense to stack the box and shut down David Johnson, the offense can move the ball. The defense is very good and needs to see less plays. Controlling the clock on the offensive side of the ball is the key to that. I expect that to happen this week and Arizona will extend their 6 game winning streak versus the Niners…yep, the Cardinals have won 6 straight in this series.

I am playing the Cardinals straight up as a Moneyline winner at +170. If you can’t get that bet or are scared, play Arizona +4.

Good luck on your wagers!

Mike’s NFL fantasy report

Start ‘Em & Sit ‘Em is the ultimate weekly look at NFL matchups and how they’ll affect your fantasy footballteam. Fantasy superstars such as Todd Gurley and Antonio Brown will not be featured. All player matchups are based on PPR scoring system. MAH401939 - Mike's NFL fantasy report vsSF - Mike's NFL fantasy report
Start of the Week – Patrick Mahomes vs. San Francisco 49ers

Is Mahomes now a must start in all fantasy leagues? If you didn’t draft an elite quarterback ahead of him, well, the answer is yes. He has another great matchup this week, as he’ll face a Niners ir?source=bk&t=312land 20&bm id=default&l=ktl&linkId=f9ed0bcfdb26f3e1c390db8a4e61c706& cb=1537564523298 - Mike's NFL fantasy reportdefense that has given up five touchdown passes and an average of 22.52 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks after two weeks. Fire him up!

COU709400 - Mike's NFL fantasy report vsBUF - Mike's NFL fantasy report
Kirk Cousins vs. Buffalo Bills

Cousins has opened the season on absolute fire, throwing for six touchdowns in his first two games. He should continue to shine in the stat sheets against the Bills, who have surrendered six touchdown passes and an average of almost 25 fantasy points per game to signal-callers. Consider Cousins a virtual must-start option.

GAR363225 - Mike's NFL fantasy reportvs. KC - Mike's NFL fantasy report
Jimmy Garoppolo vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Garoppolo has had a disappointing start to the season, but don’t lose hope in the handsome field general. In fact, this week’s matchup against the Chiefs makes him a terrific starting option for owners. Their swiss cheese defense has allowed a combined seven touchdowns and 33.97 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks.

FIT792915 - Mike's NFL fantasy report vsPIT - Mike's NFL fantasy report
Ryan Fitzpatrick vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Fitzpatrick has been on absolute fire, scoring nine total touchdowns while leading all players in fantasy points after two weeks. While the bubble might burst this week, the matchup against the Steelers is hard to ignore. Only the Chiefs have allowed more fantasy points (31.21 PPG) to opposing field generals this season.

STA134157 - Mike's NFL fantasy report vsNE - Mike's NFL fantasy report
Matthew Stafford vs. New England Patriots

The Patriots made Blake Bortles look like the GOAT last week, allowing 377 yards and four touchdowns in a loss to the Jaguars. While defensive adjustments are certain, I still like Stafford as a No. 1 fantasy quarterback based on the matchup. What’s more, game script projections have Stafford throwing the ball a ton on Sunday night.

Dak Prescott vs. Seattle Seahawks

Prescott and the Cowboys pulled out a nice win against the Giants last week, but the quarterback still had a mere 14.9 fantasy points. Derek Carr vs. Miami Dolphins

Carr looked good in last week’s loss to the Broncos, completing 90.6 percent of his passes with a rating of 114.6. Unfortunately, he mustered just 15.52 fantasy points. Next up is a road matchup in Miami. In his last 11 road contests, Carr has just one game with multiple touchdown passes and has scored 16-plus points once.

KEE690598 - Mike's NFL fantasy reportvsBAL - Mike's NFL fantasy report
Case Keenum vs. Baltimore Ravens

Keenum was a major disappointment a week ago, scoring just 14.48 fantasy points despite what looked like a nice matchup on paper against the Raiders. Now he’ll head east to face the Ravens, who have allowed just one quarterback to finish better than 15th in fantasy points over their last nine contests at home. Keep Case benched.

MAR186347 - Mike's NFL fantasy reportvsJAX - Mike's NFL fantasy report
Marcus Mariota vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Mariota missed last week’s game with a bum elbow, and his status for Week 3 remains in question. In the event that he is able to suit up, however, he needs to be far, far from your starting lineup in a matchup against the Jaguars. Their defense has allowed just one top-15 signal-caller performance on their hoome field since 2017.

Chicago Bears – TEST/DEMO Page

The Chicago Bears are a professional American football team based in Chicago, Illinois. The Bears compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) North division. The Bears have won nine NFL Championships, including one Super Bowl, and hold the NFL record for the most enshrinees in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the most retired jersey numbers. The Bears have also recorded more victories than any other NFL franchise.[6][7][8]

The franchise was founded in Decatur, Illinois, on September 17, 1920,[1][9] and moved to Chicago in 1921. It is one of only two remaining franchises from the NFL’s founding in 1920, along with the Arizona Cardinals, which was originally also in Chicago. The team played home games at Wrigley Field on Chicago’s North Side through the 1970 season; they now play at Soldier Field on the Near South Side, next to Lake Michigan. The Bears have a long-standing rivalry with the Green Bay Packers.[10]

The team headquarters, Halas Hall, is in the Chicago suburb of Lake Forest, Illinois. The Bears practice at adjoining facilities there during the season. Since 2002, the Bears have held their annual training camp, from late July to mid-August, at Ward Field on the campus of Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois.[11]

1920–1939: Early Bears
In March of 1920 a man telephoned me … George Chamberlain and he was general superintendent of the A.E. Staley Company … In 1919, [the company’s Fellowship Club] had formed a football team. It had done well against other local teams but Mr. Staley wanted to build it into a team that could compete successfully with the best semi-professional and industrial teams in the country … Mr. Chamberlain asked if I would like to come to Decatur and work for the Staley Company.

— George Halas, in his book Halas by Halas.[9]

The team’s founder George Halas (right) with NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle
Originally named the Decatur Staleys, the club was established by the A. E. Staley food starch company of Decatur, Illinois in 1919 as a company team. This was the typical start for several early professional football franchises. The company hired George Halas and Edward “Dutch” Sternaman in 1920 to run the team. The 1920 Decatur Staleys season[12] was their inaugural regular season completed in the newly formed American Professional Football Association (later renamed the National Football League (NFL) in 1922).

Full control of the team was turned over to Halas and Sternaman in 1921.[13] Official team and league records cite Halas as the founder as he took over the team in 1920 when it became a charter member of the NFL.[14]

The team relocated to Chicago in 1921, where the club was renamed the Chicago Staleys. Under an agreement reached by Halas and Sternaman with Staley, Halas purchased the rights to the club from Staley for US$100.

Les Bleus manager Didier Deschamps was the captain in 1998 when his team shocked Brazil in Paris, and on Sunday he became the third to ever win the World Cup as a player and coach.

In a match that featured anything you could have ever imagined, an own goal, a goalkeeper gaffe, pitch invaders and a teenager wunderkind finding the back of the net, France rolled to a convincing 4-1 lead and managed to hold on to earn its second star.

Missed Catch Loses College World Series Clincher for Arkansas against Oregon State

Missed Catch Loses College World Series Clincher

Arkansas lost the College World Series clincher in Game 2 on Wednesday night, after missing a key foul ball catch in the top of the ninth inning.

The Razorbacks were up 3-2 over Oregon State with only one out left, when Cadyn Grenier fouled off a ball along the first base line. Three Razorbacks raced over to make the catch, but the ball dropped at their feet.

With Arkansas looking worried after the gaffe, the Beavers started to rally. Grenier hit a RBI single to tie the game before Trevor Larnach launched a two-run homer to give the Beavers a 5-3 lead.

And of course, an exciting play to end the game and force a deciding Game 3

Payton Manning in "Gary's Gazebos and Sheds" commercial on Modern Family

Payton Manning’s funny “Gary’s Gazebos and Sheds” commercial on Modern Family

On one of the latest episodes (if you’ve been binge-watching and are over a year behind) of Modern Family, Payton Manning guest stars as a high school coach who’s been helping around the house with manly duties.

Spoiler Alert (if you’re not caught up either): It turns out that Payton Manning’s character “Gary” was attempting to be around Jay for mentor-ship in his new gazebo endeavor. As we see from the commercial before the closing credits, Gary is off and runnning…

Oakland Coliseum

Oakland A’s giving all fans free tickets.

As exhibited by the empty seats during the LA Dodgers (a.k.a “Los Doyers”) World Series vs the Chicago Cubs, attending baseball games may not be a top priorities for Californians. With the decrease in Major League Baseball over the years and the fact that some teams are just going to suck sometimes, it would be unfair to single out Cali on this. As a way to get fans in concession stand lines, The Oakland A’s have decided that they will be offering free tickets for their matchup against the Chicago White Sox on Aprril 17th. April 17th marks the 50 year anniversary since the A’s first game at the Oakland Coliseum back in 1968.

Fans can enter to win tickets and get more details on that game here.

Five thoughts from the third week of the baseball season:

1. Don’t charge people for tickets

Here’s an idea no one’s thought of before:

Instead of charging $30 for parking and anywhere from $30 to $120 for tickets, why not just open the doors and let in everyone free and watch them spend all their money on concessions?

Leave it to the Oakland A’sir?source=bk&t=312land 20&bm id=default&l=ktl&linkId=7226c5e58bdc4a187d21bac5cdfba445& cb=1523896687358 - Oakland A's giving all fans free tickets., one of the game’s least successful franchises, to do just that.

The A’s have given away all their tickets for Tuesday’s game against the White Sox in celebration of the 50th anniversary of their first game in Oakland. Parking is always free on Tuesdays, adding to the cheaper-than-cheap outing. (On Monday, when the Warriors play a playoff game next door at the same time as the A’s-Sox game, parking was raised from $30 to $40.)

The A’s received more than 300,000 ticket requests, and the park will be crammed with fans. “Mt. Davis,” the upper-deck outfield seats named for late Raiders owner Al Davis that usually are closed for A’s games, will be open for one night.

A’s besieged by hundreds of thousands of ticket requests for free admission game

By JON BECKER | jbecker@bayareanewsgroup.com | Bay Area News Group PUBLISHED: March 15, 2018 at 6:15 pm | UPDATED: March 16, 2018 at 4:38 am

The Oakland A’s have been overwhelmed by nearly 300,000 ticket requests for their 50th anniversary free admission game, a source within the organization told the Bay Area News Group on Thursday. To put that gaudy number in perspective, consider the A’s once drew 306,000 fans for an entire season.
