Artist, writer, theorist and composer Yasunao Tone presents new work embracing artificial intelligence.

Tone has collaborated with Professor Tony Myatt, University of Surrey UK, and a team of researchers including Mark Fell and Dr. Paul Modler, with the support of the Issue Project Room. A series of performances using Tone’s MP3 Deviation software were captured in a laboratory then used to train Kohoen Neural Networks to develop artificial intelligences that can simulate several of his performance approaches. The AIs are integrated in a software framework and computer performance system that extracts attributes from the audio they generate to “listen” to the output and make performance actions as if they were virtual Tone performers. Five versions of Tone AI exist in the performance software, each of which exhibits certain responses modeled on those previously adopted by Tone.

Here for Lampo, Tone performs AI Deviation V1#7 and AI Deviation V2#2.

In concert Tone deviates and controls AI versions of himself along with the mechanisms that each AI uses to hear and respond to the audio they generate—corrupting the technologies designed to simulate his own performances, and interacting live with AI versions of himself as performer.

Yasunao Tone (b.1935, Tokyo, Japan) has been active in creating event works and experimental music since the 1960s and has been an organizer and participant in Fluxus, Group Ongaku, Hi-Red Center and Team Random (Japan’s first computer art group). His work typically employs random events and indeterminate compositional techniques. Tone coined the term “paramedia art” to describe his work, and his artistic inventions include prepared CD and interventions with an MP3 system. Primarily a composer, Tone has worked in many media, creating pieces for electronics, computer systems, film, radio and television, as well as environmental art. His work is distinguished by conversion of text into music via images with analog and digital means, and with a critique of the medium in use. Tone has presented concerts at the Kitchen, MoMA and the Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona; the Ars Electronica Festival, Linz; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Sonic Lights, Amsterdam; and ATP festivals and Lovebytes festivals, UK, among many others. Honors include the Ars Electronica Golden Nica prize and the Foundation for Contemporary Arts award in music.

Yasunao Tone presented his Paramedia Mix and Wounded Kanji Dictionary at Lampo in April 2007. He also performed in the Lampo series in November 2002, joined by Florian Hecker in the duo’s first U.S. concert.

I love me some street musician performances. This busker gave the commuters chances to sing along though he picked up the crowd’s slack just fine. You’ll want to watch through to the end. This guy knows how to use the moving trains to his advantage!

T-Pain Acoustic tour,Auto-tune,I'm on a boat,Lonely Island,SNL,Soul

T-Pain… ACOUSTIC Tour?? Yep. Pre-sale password here.

T-Pain will be performing at Bottom Lounge in Chicago, IL on October 15, 2017

The Presale is on now with the password SPOTIFY

If I hadn’t seen the T-Pain piece featured on the NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert series, I would have probably continued to assume Mr Pain to delve solely into the brand of hip hop he is popular for, including being essential in popularizing the Auto-tune effect. So much so that he was included in Lonely Island’s “I’m on boat” which debuted as one of Andy Sandburg’s SNL comedy shorts. As with “novelty” acts such as Flight of the Conchords, don’t make the mistake of assuming that comedy and musical talent are mutually exclusive skills.

While one doesn’t need actually singing chops to put out good and/or creative content, much of T-Pain’s material that was made popular was the type of singing illustrated above which is heavily dependent on Auto-tune for it’s signature sound. Those little robotic shifts that make the effect fun are pretty the moments that the singer is not hitting the note, to over-simplify an explanation. In the pocket of someone who uses Auto-tune specifically for these little shifts, it’s proven to be quite the effective tool.

So that leaves us with this question: What the H would a T-Pain Acoustic show sound like from a performer who has been dissed and had his signature audio trick burned out by others? Seems like it might be weird, at best.  A nervous T-Pain himself thanks the intimate crowd as he states “This is weird as Hell for me…” as millions of YouTube viewers will discover for themselves – but maybe not in the way they imagined.

Along with his modesty and chill personality, this revelation prompted me to follow him on Facebook where, no surprise, posts aren’t limited to music promotion. Cute animals, fun locations, and boobies are never off the playlist. -j

Kroozin Music Records and Tapes

Kroozin’ Music

While starting to piece together the LoudPlace record shop, we thought It might be a good idea to offer some sort of tribute to my childhood record store – Kroozin’ Music. So I thought a nice web presence was in order and did some digging.

Growing up in Brighton Park on Chicago’s South Side, the record store of choice was Kroozin’ Music at 4069 s Archer Avenue Chicago, IL 60632 (You know, by the Brighton Theater and Zip’s Ice Cream). According to public record, a great man named Tom Brown officially put  into business on Oct 28, 1980.

Nerd fact: The file to form was obtained from the Secretary of State and has a file number of 52202833. This business was created in the Illinois SOS Office and the registered agent is Thomas H Brown who did business at 4069 S Archer Ave, Chicago in Illinois

The Evolution of a Gen-X Music Purchaser, Written and Directed by Jack Marchetti, Is a great nod to the classic record store. The short film opens to show the protagonist “Zack” skateboarding his way to Kroozin’ Music to purchase Nine Inch Nail’s new release followed by the significant moments over the years in the changing landscape of music purchasing technology.

Note that the music store in the opening scene is actually shot at Reckless Records at 3126 N Broadway Chicago IL 60657

Kroozin’ Music didn’t stop with the Archer Ave. location. Here’s a Facebook page dedicated to Kroozin’ Music II on 79th street

The final store closed due to the expansion of the nearby school. Shortly afterwards, Thomas Brown beat his liver issues and had wanted to reopen near his home in Indiana. Unfortunately, he later received his diagnosis of bone marrow cancer. According to his son Kyle, he frequently spoke about Kroozin Music into his last year of life.

Thomas H Brown passed away March 8, 2015 (Click here for Tom Brown’s Obituary).

Here’s a nice little photo tribute to Kroozin’ Music

There is nothing like the sound of siblings singing together. Whether it’s the Beach Boys or the Everly Brothers – or, more recently, First Aid Kit – absorbing the same breathing rhythms and speech patterns adds an element to vocal harmonies that can be pure magic. With the release of I’m Alone, No You’re Not, the mesmerizing, hypnotic sound of the trio known as Joseph – made up of sisters Allison, Meegan, and Natalie Closner – joins this elite company.

Before it can burst into flame, every fire needs an initial spark. For Milky Chance, that flickering introduction came a little over three years ago when they released their now infamous debut track “Stolen Dance”. After its release, Milky Chance ascended to the coveted number one spot in several countries, became the “most blogged about act” on the Hype Machine, and released the successful follow-up singles “Down By The River” and “Flashed Junk Mind” off of their self-produced album ‘Sadnecessary.’
