Recently I came across a D-Bag blog has posted a story about “Faded” Cosby Show star Geoffrey Owens was now a “starving actor” working as a cashier at Trader Joe’s. Those that think having a pleasant job in a happy environment (with health insurance) can make someone “faded” are mistaken as to what being an actor or getting roles entails. Or do these clowns actually think that having a recurring role on a show for a handful of years makes you rich beyond your wildest dreams to the point of not having to work anymore?
I later learned that Fox News actually tweeted this:
'Cosby Show' actor Geoffrey Owens spotted bagging groceries at NJ Trader Joe's https://t.co/bhkxWYa9gq
— Fox News (@FoxNews) August 31, 2018
From the blog (we’ll refer to it as “DoucheBagOnline”):
An exclusive [DoucheBagOnline] investigation discovered Owens — who played Elvin Tibideaux on the long-running sitcom The Cosby Show — scanning groceries in Clifton, N.J., for around $11 an hour.
The guy gives Shakespearean acting classes in New York. Like other actors, he holds a regular job which, by the way, has a nice insurance plan.
The NEW YORKER chimed in:
Wearing an ID badge bearing his name, the balding 57-year-old sported a stained Trader Joe’s T-shirt Opens a New Window. while manning his post.
A “stained” t-shirt. At least at this point, we know for certain this is just a douchebag crap site.
“He looked bloated and unhappy Opens a New Window. ,” noted shopper Karma Lawrence, 50, a medical secretary.
Oh so this idiot can tell he is unhappy with his life because she’s a medical secretary?
Despite his grim mood, Owens politely wished Lawrence “a good day” after ringing up her items, she said.
“Grim mood” but was polite.
Still, she was shocked to see him.
“It made me feel really bad. I was like, ‘Wow! All those years of doing the show and you ended up as a cashier,’” Lawrence said.
Owens played oldest daughter Sondra Huxtable’s boyfriend-then-husband on the NBC show from 1985 to 1992.
But after the series ended, he found himself on the outside, according to his aging mother, Ethel.
Come on, Mom! Furreals?
“He was the star of the show, but they forgot about him after it went off the air!” Ethel — who shares a two-story home with Owens in nearby Montclair — told DouchebagOnline.
But Trader Joe’s customers still recognize him, she said.
“They come up and say they remember him from their childhoods,” Ethel said.
After Cosby, Owens landed sporadic guest spot TV gigs.
And “sporadic” is supposed to imply that it’s a bad thing. It’s a pretty sweet deal to get a line on a show – especially when you have other gigs like this man does.
He’s also had bit parts in the 2018 short film Fizzle and on TV’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

I had been a working actor for years. Jobs stopped, as they do. I worked in retail. At a flower shop. I passed out flyers. It’s about the work. Work gives you pride and purpose. Your visibility as an actor never goes away. But the money sure does. #geoffreyowens pic.twitter.com/BBzZaBrGBx

When DoucheBagOnline called Owen and asked about Trader Joe’s, he slammed down the phone (REALLY, DouchebagOnline? Did he SLAM down the phone? Really?). , but contacted us the next day to list his recent acting jobs, including teaching a Shakespearean workshop in New York City.
So just anyone can say they’ve been on a major hit show with appearances on others and be teaching Shakespearean workshops?
Said Karma: “I would have thought after The Cosby Show he would maybe be doing something different. Other fans would be surprised as well.”
“Because that’s the only way my simple, Daily-McDonald’s-eating ass can process things.”
An act of kindness. Twenty-two years ago while I was in college, #GeoffreyOwens and his wife found out that I didn't have enough food to eat. I hardly knew them. They bought me bags of groceries and hugged me as I cried – shocked by their kindness. A hero stands tall anywhere. pic.twitter.com/A14ywAPFo3

My respect to actor #GeoffreyOwens, who found honest work between gigs. As @FoxNews will tell you, all actors, when not acting, seal themselves in protein-solution "shame pods" until re-activated by the Council of Casting. Geoffrey had the courage to stand up to the Council.

Geoffrey Owens volunteering at my school! Teaching acting to kids that normally would not get the chance! Fox news owes him a public appology! This type of reporting needs to stop! pic.twitter.com/TavqCv5s4B

I say "More power to you, Geoffrey Owens." I had my own VH1 talk show in the late 80s. I hosted a Food Network show that ran from 2002-2008. In the last few years, I've worked as a dogwalker. Good dogs, good owners. https://t.co/SpTOfEjUNV
