We all know that making healthy eating choices and getting at least thirty minutes of exercise five days a week helps to keep a person healthier and potentially allow him or her to live longer. It turns out that going to Disney may help you live a longer life, as well. Sound too good to be true? Well, research actually proves it!
The European Society of Cardiology studied over 1,200 men who were at risk of heart disease (those exhibiting one or more of the following indicators: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, being overweight or smoking) over 40 years.
Of those 1,200 men, those who did not use all of their vacation time from work were 37% more likely to die than those who did! Even if those who were at risk choose healthier foods and get enough exercise, taking a yearly vacation is what had the greatest impact on a longer lifespan.
“Don’t think having an otherwise healthy lifestyle will compensate for working too hard and not taking holidays,” lead professor Timo Strandberg said. “Vacations can be a good way to relieve stress.”
Another study by Allianz Global Assistance indicates that those who don’t take a vacation are almost twice as likely to show signs of moderate depression. In light of the fact that more than half of American workers left vacation days on the table in 2017, these studies show that people are not doing what they need to do to be more healthy … taking a vacation!
Finally, Dr. Thomas Gilovich, a psychology professor at Cornell University in New York has completed four studies on money and happiness. His findings? Happiness comes from experiences, not things. The experiences that you and your loved ones have at Disney help to create lifelong memories. Personally, having pictures and memories from Disney of a loved one that is no longer with me is absolutely priceless.
Considering Walt Disney World is touted “the happiest place on earth,” what better place to help depression, create memories, and help you live longer? Taking (at the very least) a yearly trip to Disney may actually help lengthen your life!
