GET AN I-PASS FOR EVERY VEHICLE OR PAY DOUBLE:
On Monday, I told you about an Illinois Tollway plan to make every I-PASS user get a transponder for EVERY vehicle. You had a lot of great questions. We reached out to the Tollway for a live interview to answer your questions and they declined! So, I did some digging and here’s what I found.
*As of Jan. 1st you will need an I-PASS transponder for every vehicle that uses the tollways.
*If you don’t have a transponder in every vehicle, those vehicles without the physical devices in them will be charged the cash rate. I-PASS users pay half of what cash toll users pay.
*If you have two vehicles and they are both registered to one transponder, you need to purchase an additional transponder for that second vehicle to not be charged the double rate.
*The Tollway did say in a response to us they are encouraging people to get a discount. LIES. They are hoping you don’t see this change to the rules and you don’t purchase a transponder for additional vehicles so they can make more $$. A reporter with the Daily Herald found the Illinois Tollway will make $15M in extra revenue under the new rules. And they’ll make that money by people NOT purchasing a transponder for every vehicle.
*Transponders cost $10 and that money is considered a refundable deposit, that goes straight into your I-PASS account.
*For those of you who have misplaced your transponders, I would get a replacement so that you don’t have to pay the Tollway more $ come the first of the year.

HOW TO GET A NEW TRANSPONDER:
Order the devices online through your I-PASS account at illinoistollway.com and by phone at (800) UC-IPASS (800-824-7277). Or, pick one up at a local Jewel-Osco store or tollway customer service center.
